Integrated Technology Lesson
Classroom Description
- The specific class I am envisioning when I create this lesson is one for my own future class. My class will consist of 3-4 students in the 7th grade. My topic will be Science. My set of students will be most likely 3 girls and 1 boy from what I have been told. My students will have a harder time reading than most and may need more attention helping with reading and or understanding the instructions. I do know that all of my students will have a personal computer as will I. In addition I will have access to a smart board at the front of my classroom.
Lesson Description
- My lesson idea will focus around exploring the difference of plant and animal cells. I will present pictures and images of these cells to my students as well as video and an interactive game. At the end I will test them using a quiz with the use of Blendspace.
Content Area Standard
- North Carolina Essential Standards 7th Grade Science - 7.L.1.2 Compare the structures and functions of plant and animal cells, including major organelles (cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and vacuoles). (North Carolina Essential Standards 6-8 Science, 2019)
Step by Step Guide
- First I would let the students know that we would be working on cell structure today. I would explain to them at the end of this lesson the goal for them is to be able to relate cell structure to cell function (specifically: cell membrane, nucleus, chloroplasts, cytoplasm, and mitochondria).
- I would have already sent and email out to each student and asked them to take out their computers and open the email that I have sent them most recently. Once the email is open it will look like the example below. I will ask them to then click on the link "Plant and Animal Cell." This will take them to the Lesson plan for the day, which will be derived from the website Blendspace.
- Example Email -
tb100589 has invited you to view the lesson called "Plant and Animal Cell" , and left you this message:
"Cell Structure Lesson"
Plant and Animal Cell Enjoy!
- The Blendspace Team

- Once the link to my site was open I would go over with them out loud the first 6 slides, (excluding the microscope slide). I would ask them if they had any questions. During the last 3 slides I would ask them questions after reading the examples out loud as to which cell they belonged in, animal or plant?
- After the first section I would have them open up the next page but to not click play. I would like to play this video on the smart board or television in the classroom as to not have conflicting sounds overlapping each other.
- After the movie I would have them open the next two pictures and ask them to read aloud as I stand at the front of the classroom and point to each structure.
- Next after going over the structures I have a hand out that I would like for them to fill out. It is the next slide in the presentation. I would ask that first they try to label each structure on their own. Once they can no longer fill anything out to them refer back to the labeled pictures from before. However, at the bottom is function questions. I would ask that they hold off on it till we get done with the jeopardy game.
- Now using the knowledge they gained from the video, presentations, and images I would ask that they split up into 2 groups if possible. Once they have done that I would have them play the jeopardy game together.
- The last part is a short quiz that I have set up. First I will pass out the blank answer sheet for them to use as provided on the next slide. Then I would ask them to take the quiz till slide 17. I would walk around and watch to make sure no talking occurred. Once the student reaches slide 17 I would ask that they raise their hand. Once every student is done I would have them switch papers with another student and continue from slide 17 and grade each others work. At the end of this lesson I would ask for a exit ticket.
- The exit ticket would consist of a note card with 2 questions.
1. What areas would you like to focus more on to fully understand the material from today's class?
2. Do you have any suggestions on how to improve this lesson?
Technology Discussion
When selecting a technology that I wished to use for a lesson I wanted to use one that was more than just one media format such as a video or quiz application. I wanted to incorporate them all. My students will have access to their own personal computer in my classroom and I wish to capitalize on that. In addition from my time in Instructional Technology this summer I have learned that the generation of students I will be teaching are “digital natives,” what I have came to learn is that they have been surrounded by technology their entire life. When deciding on Blendspace as the technology of choice I was further interested and decided to use it from the readings of two articles. These are exceprts from these articles that helped make my decision in selecting Blendspace.
According to Sarkar, Ford, and Manzo (2017), “Blendspace facilitates an active learning environment preferred by digital natives. Micro-lectures and videos replace classroom lectures and consequently class time can be repurposed for more active and experiential learning” (p. 2).
When reading about this type of technology in the classroom from this author it made me think that I could perhaps allow my students to read aloud or work in partner exercises. My classroom, from my understanding, will have more of a challenge to read than other classes for my grades. This technology application will allow me to easily use video and other formats that read aloud or present information without my students having as much difficulty going over the information themselves. My co-teacher and I plan to work on reading in the classroom as much as we can. We have even devoted an hour each day just to reading. However, until my students are able to fully read to themselves this will be a great avenue to help present my subjects information to them.
According to Devaki and Deivam (2017), “The study shows that the multimedia lesson plays an important role in improving the achievement of students in educational psychology. Many research studies revealed that the effects of a multimedia lesson enhance the students learning process and enrich their retention” (p 510).
My classroom consists of at risk students who have to leave the classroom three hours a day to work on behavioral issues. This is a large chunk of educational time. To have a tool that can give them an edge at retention and enriching their learning process is a great benefit. I feel that this could help plan my lessons better and be more structured to make sure that there are no unnecessary discussions as time is a precious commodity in my classroom.
